A portable monitor is one of the few travel accessories that changes how much work you can get done on the move. It is also the accessory most often bought wrong, because the specification that matters most — whether your laptop can output video over USB-C at all — is usually buried in a footnote.

This guide covers four portable monitors at different price points and sizes, plus the checks worth doing before buying any of them. Specifications are manufacturer-published; brightness and colour are not measured by us.

Working on a laptop away from a desk
The single most common mistake: buying a panel the laptop cannot actually drive.

Three checks before buying

1. Video over USB-C. Confirm DisplayPort alt mode support for your exact laptop model. Some USB-C ports carry data and power only; some budget machines route video only through HDMI.

2. Power path. Ask whether the monitor can take power from a separate charger while receiving video from the laptop. If it cannot, every hour of screen time costs a measurable slice of laptop battery.

3. Stand and mounting. Portable monitors either have a built-in stand, a folding cover that doubles as one, or nothing. A screen that slides down a hotel desk is a screen you stop carrying.

The four picks

Best portable monitor overall

HP Series 5 Pro 514pn

A 14-inch portable panel that prioritises brightness and colour coverage over gimmicks: enough gamut for photo work and enough brightness for a bright hotel room.

Why it works

  • Bright, colour-accurate panel for a portable
  • 16:10 aspect ratio matches modern laptops
  • Thin and light enough for a laptop bag

What to weigh up

  • Smaller than 15.6-inch alternatives
  • Needs a kickstand or case stand, which some rivals build in
Panel: 14-inch WQXGA IPS, 16:10 aspect ratioColour: Full sRGB and wide DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB coverage (published)Connection: USB-C and mini-HDMI inputsPower: Powered over USB-C from the host

The overall portable pick: a bright, colour-accurate 14-inch panel in the 16:10 shape your laptop probably uses, for people who need accurate colour away from the desk.

Best portable monitor for creative work

ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED

A 15.6-inch 4K OLED portable monitor: the contrast and colour that OLED brings, in a panel that runs from a laptop over USB-C.

Why it works

  • OLED contrast and colour in a portable form factor
  • Two USB-C ports make power routing easier
  • Built-in stand means no separate accessory

What to weigh up

  • Premium price for a portable monitor
  • 15.6-inch panel adds bulk to a small bag
  • OLED brightness is lower than the best IPS portables
Panel: 15.6-inch 4K OLED, 60HzContrast: OLED-level contrast with true blacksConnection: Dual USB-C with power delivery support, mini-HDMIExtras: Built-in stand and speakers on the current model

The creative professional’s choice: a 15.6-inch 4K OLED portable panel with two USB-C ports and a built-in stand. Premium price, OLED contrast, more bulk.

Best portable touch monitor

Lenovo ThinkVision M14t Gen 2

A compact 14-inch portable monitor with touch and stylus support, aimed at people who annotate rather than just read. The pen input is the reason to choose it.

Why it works

  • Touch and stylus input, rare in portable monitors
  • Compact 14-inch size that fits small bags
  • Height-adjustable built-in stand

What to weigh up

  • Stylus is not always included
  • Resolution is below 4K OLED portables
Panel: 14-inch 2240x1400 IPS, touch enabledInput: Stylus support for annotation and sketching (published)Connection: USB-C with pass-through powerStand: Built-in adjustable stand with a wide tilt range

For annotation and stylus work: a compact 14-inch touch panel with pen support and a wide-range built-in stand. Choose it if you mark up documents rather than just read them.

Best cheap portable monitor

MSI PRO MP165 E6

An affordable 15.6-inch 1080p portable panel that covers the basics: USB-C and mini-HDMI inputs, a light body and mounting options. It will not impress on colour, but it costs a fraction of the alternatives.

Why it works

  • Low price for a usable second screen
  • Light enough to be carried occasionally
  • Mounting options suit a temporary desk

What to weigh up

  • 1080p resolution is soft for text work
  • Colour coverage and brightness are basic
Panel: 15.6-inch 1080p IPSConnection: USB-C and mini-HDMIMounting: Supports VESA and tripod mounting

The budget option: a 15.6-inch 1080p panel that covers the basics cheaply, with VESA and tripod mounting. Text will look soft, so use it for chat windows and video rather than long documents.

Comparing the four

What to skip

  • 1080p on a 15.6-inch panel if you read a lot. The price advantage is real, but you will notice the softness every day.
  • A portable monitor with no stand and no case-stand. It will end up propped against a coffee cup.
  • Wireless portable monitors. They add latency and a charging problem to solve a cable you could have plugged in.
  • Touch support if you do not use it. It adds cost and removes brightness.

A note on power banks

Portable monitors and power banks pair naturally for travel, and the airline rules are the same ones that apply to any lithium battery: check the watt-hour rating before flying, keep batteries in cabin baggage, and prefer a bank with enough output to run the panel while it powers the laptop. See our power bank guide for the specifics, including the thresholds that require airline approval.
